Your metabolism is like a fire that burns energy, when you have a big hot fire, you can throw logs on there & they get burned up easily, but if you have a smouldering fire it takes a long time to burn the same log. Just like having a fast or slow metabolism determines how efficiently you burn energy or store it away as fat. There are several factors that influence your metabolism:

  • The amount of muscle mass you have
  • How much thyroid hormone is getting into your cells
  • How sensitive your body is to insulin
  • The amount/type of exercise you get
  • The climate you live in
  • Hormonal imbalances

Clues your metabolism is slowing your down:

  • Energy fluctuates through the day
  • Tired after meals
  • Puffy eyes
  • Irritble between meals
  • Need a pick-me-up in the afternoon
  • Colds hands and feet
  • Sugar/Carb cravings
  • Dry skin & hair
  • Hair loss
  • Low libido
  • Low Body Temperature (<98.0F after you get out of bed)
  • You eat carbs and gain weight
  • You have a low caloric intake & can’t lose weihgt
  • You exercise regularly & struggle to get the weight off if at all

Hormones that influence your metabolism include:

Testosterone: Produced by both men and women, boosts metabolism, increases muscle mass, inhibits fat storage. Low testosterone can lead to sugar cravings and insulin resistance.

Insulin: Our sugar hormone, helps move sugar from our blood into our cell to be burned as energy! It helps to regulate metabolism influencing how we burn energy and store fat. If you have any kind of insulin dysregulation it’s very hard to lose weight. This being the primary issue with PCOS and diabetes.

DHEA: This hormone is the precursor to testosterone, and is drained by stress! It promotes weight loss by increasing metabolism, preventing fat storage and decreases your appetite, and is important for men & women.

Thyroid: This is one of the most commonly overlooked, under diagnosed hormone imbalances, doctors often only testing your TSH and using huge ranges miss patients with low thyroid. Your thyroid hormone liothyronine (T3) gets into the cells in your body and activates your metabolism. If your not making enough T4 from T4, or not making enough T4 then your metabolism will be slow and losing weight a slow and painful process.

Cortisol: Our stress hormone, helps us to adapt to stress, give us the juice to get up and go in the morning, and plays a role in fat storage, largely influence our weight and ability to lose weight.

Human Growth Hormone (HGH): This hormone steadily declines with age, leading to sagging muscles and skin. We produce it in our sleep! It’s needed to convert body fat into muscle mass. When healthy is prevents fat deposition and production under the skin.

Adiponectin, Leptin & Incretin: other hormones that regulate satiety, fat and sugar breakdown and metabolism.
